Question-storming: The leadership tool you're not using enough

Question-storming flips the script: instead of rushing to solutions, the team generates as many questions as possible, no answers.

The aim is to uncover the real problem worth solving.

This innovative approach encourages participants to think critically and creatively, allowing them to explore various angles of a situation without the pressure of finding immediate solutions. By focusing on questions rather than answers, teams can dive deeper into the complexities of a problem, fostering an environment where curiosity reigns and diverse perspectives are welcomed.

The aim is to uncover the real problem worth solving. Identifying the core issue is often more challenging than it appears, as initial assumptions can lead to misguided solutions. Through the question-storming process, teams can reveal underlying factors, hidden challenges, and the broader context surrounding the problem at hand. This method not only enhances understanding but also encourages collaboration among team members, as they build on each other's inquiries and insights. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that when a solution is finally reached, it addresses the fundamental concerns and leads to meaningful, sustainable outcomes.

Initial Problem - Real Problem

Another Initial Problem-Real Problem

RUNNING A QUESTION-STORMING SESSION

  • Frame the challenge

Example: "Our customer churn increased 15% this quarter."

  • Generate questions

For 10-15 minutes, every participant lists as many questions as possible about the challenge. No answers.

  • Group and prioritize

Cluster similar questions, then identify which ones open the most promising lines of thinking.

  • Explore before deciding

Only after reframing the issue with better questions should you move to brainstorming answers.
