Brain Foods for Brain Power
CEO. Chief Executive Officer. The CEO takes on many roles within a company: setting the strategy and direction of the company, setting the company’s culture and, building and leading the senior executive team. All of these roles require a lot of brain power. Unfortunately, for many CEO’s, their typical diet detracts from brain power instead of promoting it. Healthy food fuels our body, as well as our minds, nourishing cells within the brain that allows for cognitive functioning. Getting enough nutrients supports cognitive functioning, while nutrient deficiencies decrease cognition. Incorporating fats and protein into your diet is crucial for maintaining cognitive function. Foods like avocadoes are amazing for brain support. They are a healthy fat and are loaded with fiber and protein. Avocadoes also boost the production of dopamine, which helps to keep us focused. Toss an avocado in a smoothie, or smash it on a piece of whole wheat toast in the morning, along with some pumpkin seeds, which are loaded with zinc, which is vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills, and sea salt. It’s a great way to give your brain a wake- up call every morning. Speaking of healthy fats, getting a healthy dose of Omega 3s will do the brain good. Foods like salmon and walnuts are rich in Omega 3s. Sprinkle some chia seeds in your soups, on salads, and in your smoothies. It’s a great way to boost your Omega 3 intake. Another great brain food, which is actually considered to be the #1 brain food by many is blueberries. Blueberries contain powerful anti-oxidants called anthocyanins. These compounds have been linked to improved memory, learning, reasoning skills, decision making, verbal comprehension, and numerical abilities. These skills are crucial when it comes to running a company. Not only do blueberries nourish brain cells that you already have, amazingly, they help to stimulate new brain cell production. It always amazes me how much nutrition is packed in this tiny blue berry. One of my favorite foods for brain health, which I believe people don’t eat enough of, is beets. They are sweet tasting and beautifully colored and an extremely powerful brain enhancer. The brain needs good brain flow to perform efficiently. As we get older, we have less blood flow to certain parts of the brain. Behold the beet!!! Drinking beet juice restores blood flow to the parts of the brain that are compromised when we get older, improving cognitive function. If you don’t have a juicer at home, pick up a bottle of beet juice at your local supermarket. It will do your brain good, and give you a shot of energy in the process. So there you have it. Stir in the chia seeds (if using) and let soak for 5 minutes. Serve the juice immediately, over ice if desired.
